800-304-3107

A tax intercept/refund offset means your federal refund was reduced because the Treasury applied it to a past-due debtin the Treasury Offset Program (TOP).

Common debts that can cause an intercept

Refunds may be offset for things like:

  • Past-due child support

  • Debts to federal agencies

  • State income tax obligations

  • State unemployment compensation debts

How you’ll know it happened

If your refund is offset, you should receive a notice that shows:

  • Your expected refund amount

  • How much was taken (offset)

  • The agency that received the payment and how to contact them
